Three members of our Mining Searches team came face to face with the reality of their work recently during a staff training exercise with a difference … as they explored a former tin mine in west Cornwall.
Tony Bennett, Head of Search Development at Cornwall Consultants Ltd, has been involved in the restoration of the mine for over 30 years, so he was the perfect guide as our staff explored narrow tunnels and viewed cavernous workings beneath the Cornish landscape. Standing at the base of a voided mine shaft and looking up to surface, the staff were asked to visualise the same scene beneath many of the now developed parts of the South West where tens of thousands of such features still lie hidden.
Newly recruited Geologist Tim Green said of the experience
“It’s amazing to think that these workings exist with so little evidence visible at surface. It really explains how mining subsidence can remain such a hidden threat in Cornwall [and Devon and Somerset – Ed].”
