Cornwall has a rich history of mining and the region became the most important global producer of tin and copper in the late 18th and 19th Century. Today, this legacy of historic mining activity presents a challenge but it should not be a barrier to the benefits of land improvement, development or regeneration works thanks to our mine remediation service.

The legacy of extensive mining activity in the Southwest of England has resulted in the presence of thousands of untoward mining features being present upon the surface of the land and are commonly in areas where construction development has either been completed, is currently ongoing or is planned for the future.
Mining Remediation and Ground Stability is the process by which investigation techniques are used to find and delineate such features and once excavated and exposed are either filled or capped with concrete and steel to various designs so that the previously highly dangerous features no longer present a hazard to persons or animals.
These historic mining features and their surrounding grounds provide a high possibility of subsidence unless suitably remediated to a professional standard. If left untreated they could have significantly detrimental, dangerous and disasterous impact on any developments or habitations built within the affected areas.
Where historic mine features are identified, Cornwall Mining Consultants are able to undertake sophisticated site level surveying and ground level monitoring of affected areas as part of the dynamic assessment of risk posed to the site. We can design and supervise targeted ground investigations to accurately define abandoned mine workings, unstable ground and associated zones of subsidence risk. We liaise closely with structural engineers, loss adjustors, architects and local planning authorities – providing our expert input on appropriate land remediation and stabilisation schemes.
All the works undertaken are fully documented and recorded before being compiled within a fully detailed photographic report which is suitable for insurance and conveyancing purposes. Cornwall Mining Consultants can also work in close liaison with other professional bodies and so therefore can cover a wide range of remediation projects from small individual features to multiple large scale sites.
