Much of the historic mining activity in Somerset is associated with metalliferous mineralisation surrounding Exmoor and other areas of high ground, from which it extends out to the surrounding villages and towns. This means we are frequently contacted to undertake mining investigations in Somerset as well as mining searches, including on Exmoor itself.
Our detailed mining archive records also show that historic metalliferous mining occurred around the Quantock Hills to the east of Exmoor as well as down to the south, where the Blackdown Hills of Somerset are known for the historic production of iron from locally mined ores. In addition, The Mendips of North Somerset were mined for both iron and lead ores along with the associated ochre deposits, particularly around Banwell, Shipham, Axebridge, Cheddar and up in towards southwest Bristol.
This ancient and historic mining has, as with Cornwall and Devon, left a legacy that remains today. We are often asked to assist in property sales in Somerset on a consultative basis, providing highly accurate and detailed desktop studies of both land and dwellings. View our Services >
