We believe in supporting young people throughout the south west at Cornwall Mining Consultants and participate in work experience schemes wherever possible.
Last month we were joined by Imogen Sparks, a master’s student undertaking her studies in mining and environmental management. We asked her to summarise her time with us, here is what she had to say….
My time with Cornwall Mining Consultants was incredible!! I chose to spend my work experience with them as their reputation for being the south west’s leading mining and environment consultancy is unrivalled and I knew I would glean so much from the team. I had the privilege of working on some fascinating projects, each exposing me to the diverse world of land contamination studies, engineering geology, mine investigations and site inspections.
I spent my week shadowing a vast selection of works including Phase I and Phase II land contamination studies. This involved conducting preliminary site assessment desk research to determine the potential for contamination.
I was able to observe the team collecting data from various sources, including their extensive in-house historical records, site visits and data published by the British Geological Society. This process was critical in identifying potential contamination hotspots, enabling the team to plan for a more in-depth Phase II study.
I also took the chance to participate in a Phase II soil sampling which was incredibly hands-on and exciting. This involved using specialist equipment to collect samples from varying depths and locations on a particular site.
It was amazing to see how the data from these samples was used to inform decisions about land development prospects as well as potential remediation strategies and suggestions.
Another highlight for me was taking part in site investigation works, including the inspection of a historical mine shaft collapse and a walkover of historical mine architecture in Redruth.
This was fantastic to see and learn from how the team worked in the field, using their historical data, mining expertise and experience to interpret historical architecture and geological landscapes. All of this whilst discussing or suggesting potential causes for subsidence, plans for further ground inspections and mining investigations.
Overall this has been an incredibly positive experience for me and I would like to thank the entire team for being so welcoming and willing to involve me in all aspects of their work. For taking the time to talk with me and having the patience to answer all my queries. It was great to see a team so enthusiastic, knowledgeable and passionate about their work and projects, inspiring me more than they know!
